בדבר מה שכתב ידידנו הרב הגאון המופלא בכתם אופיר לא יסולה ר' משה לוי שליט"א בספרו מנוחת אהבה (ח"ג עמוד צ"ב) בענין הכנים לפי דעת חכמי המדע בזמננו, דבריו נכוחים וישרים, כולם נכוחים למבין וישרים למוצאי דעת. וכיוון לדעת הגאון ר' יצחק למפרונטי זצ"ל (שחי לפני כ-250 שנה) בספרו "פחד יצחק" (ערך צידה) שכתב שבזמננו שהתברר שגם הכנים פרים ורבים אין להרגם ושומר נפשו ירחק מהם. וע"ש שהתווכח בנדון זה עם רבו הרה"ג ר' יהודה בריאל זצ"ל ועמד בדעתו. וידידנו הגר"מ הלוי שליט"א כתב לקיים דברי חכמים שיהיה הדין אמת עכ"פ. וחלילה וחלילה לפסול את דבריו מפני שהתייחס לדעות המדענים בזמננו, דתורה אמת כתיב בה, וכל הפוסל במומו פוסל. וע"ע כיו"ב להפרי חדש ביו"ד סי' פ' סק"ב על סוגיא דשבת (כח:) שהיא תמוהה וכו' ובבכור שור חולין דף נ"ט ע"ב. ע"ש באורך. ועכ"פ אין בזה שום פגם ושום פסול ח"ו. ויפוצו מעיינותיו חוצה. ויתקיים בו הכתוב משכני אחריך נרוצה.

To whom it may concern:

Regarding what our beloved scholar ... Rabbi Moshe Levi wrote in his book, Menuchat Ahava (part 3, p. 92) about lice based on the view of the scientists of our times – his words are straight and just – straight to one with understanding and just to those who have found knowledge. His view coincided with that of the great scholar Rabbi Yitzchak Lampronti (who lived 250 years ago) in his book Pachad Yitzchak (“Tzeida”), who wrote that in our times, it having become clear that lice, too, procreate, one should not kill them.... Look there, that he debated this matter with his teacher, the great scholar Rabbi Yehuda Briel, and maintained his position. And our beloved Rabbi Moshe Levi wrote so as at least to retain the halacha as a true halacha. God forbid to reject his words because he considered the views of modern scientists! For “truth” is written in the Torah; and anyone who criticizes criticizes his own flaws. See more like [what Rabbi Moshe Levi] wrote, in Pri Chadash, Yoreh De’a 80:2 ... and in Bechor Shor, Chullin 59b, at length. Certainly, there is nothing offensive or objectionable [in what he wrote], God forbid. May his springs spead outward....
