Appendix: Rashash

(On the subject of assigning value to empirical scientific evidence, Rashash (Rabbi Shmuel Strashun; 1794-1872; Lithuania), Pesachim 94a s.v. "Tos." assumes that the world is spherical, based on the scientific evidence, and states that all Talmudic statements indicating the contrary have to be reinterpreted. This does not necessarily mean that Chazal did not possess perfect scientific knowledge, but it does mean that the findings of modern science constitute a valid reason to assign a non-literal interpretation to scientific statements in the Talmud that run counter to those findings.
