Rabbeinu Chananel

(ben Chushiel; 990-1053; Tunisia), Pesachim 94b, s.v. "Tanu rabbanan chachmei yisrael omrim chamah", cites a dispute in Bereishit Rabbah between Rabbi Yehudah bar Ilai and rabbanan as, seemingly, parallelling the dispute between chachmei yisrael and chachmei umot ha'olam. This presumably means Rabbeinu Chananel believed that at least some of Chazal had incorrect scientific beliefs. Interestingly, the rabbanan in Bereishit Rabbah seem to assert the opinion held by chachmei umot ha'olam on Pesachim 94b. The passage in Bereishit Rabbah also quotes Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai as expressing Chazal's ignorance on a certain scientific question (although I don't really understand what that question is):

רבינו חננאל פסחים צד: ד"ה "ת"ר חכמי ישראל אומרים חמה מהלכת ביום למטה מן הרקיע ובלילה למעלה מן הרקיע" (ש"ס ווילנא); ז"ל

ת"ר חכמי ישראל אומרים חמה מהלכת ביום למטה מן הרקיע ובלילה למעלה מן הרקיע כמו שפרשהו ר' יהודה ורבה וחכמי אומות העולם אומרין חמה מהלכת ביום למעלה מן הארץ ובלילה למטה מן הארץ ואמר רבי נראין דבריהם מדברינו ומפורשת עוד בבראשית רבה.  כיצד חמה ולבנה שוקעין ר' יהודה בר אילעאי אומר מאחורי כיפה [למעלה] רבנן אמרי מאחורי כיפה ולמטה ר' שמעון בן יוחאי אומר אין אנו יודעין באויר אם שפין הן ברקיע ואם מהלכין הן כדרכן:  עכ"ל

Our rabbis taught: "The sages of Israel say that the sun travels below the firmament by day and above it by night," ... "and the gentile sages say that the sun travels above the earth by day and below it by night; Rabbi [Yehudah Hanasi] said, 'Their words seem more probable than ours.'"  This is further explained in Bereishit Rabbah: "How do the sun and moon set?  Rabbi Yehudah bar Ila'i says, behind the covering [of the firmament] and above; the rabbis say, behind the covering and below.  Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai says, 'We do not know whether [they fly through the air, or glide on the firmament, or proceed along their own path].'"  [Translation by HWMNBN.  The last sentence is probably corrupt and is unintelligible (to me, anyway).  Instead of translating it as it appears in the text of Rabbeinu Chananel, I have substituted my attempted translation of the sentence as it appears in the standard Bereishit Rabbah text.]
