Rivam

(Rabbi Yitzchak ben Meir; c. 1090-1130; France), quoted in Tosafot, Chullin 59a, s.v. "Eilu hein simanei chaya kol sheyeish lah karnayim utelafayim": Describes a tannaic zoological dispute.

אלו הן סימני חיה כל שיש לה קרנים וטלפים. קרנים אתי לאפוקי מבהמה דכיון דיש לה קרנים חרוקות וכרוכות כדלקמן אם כן לאו בהמה היא אבל אכתי איכא לספוקי בחיה טמאה לכך בעינן טלפים פרסות הסדוקות דהשתא ליכא לספוקי לא בחיה טמאה ולא בבהמה טהורה וחלבה מותר רבי דוסא אומר כל שיש לה קרנים קרני חיה אי אתה צריך לחזור על הטלפים דסבר דחיה טמאה אין לה קרנים והשתא צריך לומר הא דתנן בפרק בא סימן (נדה נא:) כל שיש לו קרנים יש לו טלפים רבי דוסא היא דאילו רבנן הא אמרי כי נמי אית לה קרנים אכתי איכא לספוקי דילמא חיה טמאה היא כך פי' הריב"ם.... עכ"ל

"These are the signs of a [kosher] chaya [wild animal]: anything with horns and hooves." Horns are needed to preclude its being a beheima [domesticated animal]: if the animal has grooved and layered horns (as per later on) it must not be a beheima. It may still, however, be a non-kosher chaya. Therefore, we require also split hooves; if they are also present, we need worry neither than the animal is a non-kosher chaya, nor that it is a kosher beheima; [and we can therefore conclude that] its fat is permitted [unlike the fat of a kosher beheima]. Rabbi Dosa says that if something has horns – the horns of a chaya – one need not check its hooves; for Rabbi Dosa believes that a non-kosher chaya has no horns [and therefore the horns alone demonstrate that the animal is both a chaya and kosher]. If so, one must conclude that the mishna in Chapter Ba Siman (Niddah 51b), "Everything that has horns has [split] hooves," reflects the opinion of Rabbi Dosa, for the rabbis [who argue with him here] say that even if an animal has horns, one must still doubt whether it is kosher. Thus is the explanation of Rivam. [translation by HWMNBN]
