מסתברא שבקיאות זאת החכמה היא בידיעת ספרי הגוים שהם אתנו היום כספרי אבוקרט וגלינום וזולתם ואף על פי שיש עמנו הרבה מענייני הרפואה בחכמת התלמוד כמו בפרק ח' שרצים ופרק מי שאחזו קורדיקוס, ופרק אין בין מודר הנאה ובכמה מקומות שדברו בכחלי' והקילורים ובסגלות העקרים ובסגלות הקמיעין אבל מיוחד להם ז"ל בזה אינו נמצא אתנו והוצרכנו לאותם הספרי' מפני שהם מסדרי' אותם חכמה תחלה בנתוח אברי האדם ומתכונתם ובמזגיהם והסבות והמקרים והחליים וההוראות והרפואות הכל בסדר נכון מהם תצא חכמה מפוארה, וכזה הזכיר הר"ם ז"ל בענין הראייה פרק י"ז מקודש החדש, ואין ספק שהכל היה עמנו ובזמן גלותנו אבדה חכמת חכמינו ומצאו הגוים ספרינו והעתיקום על שמם במעט שנוי שעשו בהם, אבל מ"מ חכמים לחוד ורופאים לחוד וכדאמרי' פרק המפלת מעשה באשה אחת שהייתה מפלת כמין קליפות אדומות ובאו ושאלו את אבא ואבא שאל לחכמים וחכמים שאלו לרופאים אמרה להם אשה זו מכה יש לה בתוך מעיה שממנה מפלת כמין קליפות אדומות: ... עכ"ל

It is reasonable to assume that this knowledge [i.e., medicine] is contained in the books of the gentiles with us today....  Even though we have with us much medical information in the wisdom of the Talmud, ... we have no text from [the sages] devoted specifically to the topic. ... All of that knowledge was doubtless with us, and during our exile [or when we were exiled] our sages' wisdom was lost and gentiles found our books and copied them in their own names and with the small changes that they made to them; but regardless, the [Torah] sages and the physicians were distinct from each other, as it says in Chapter "Hamapelet" (Niddah 22b): "[Rabbi Elazar bar Rabbi Tzadok said, ...] 'There was a case in which a woman [had a certain physical problem], and they came and consulted my father, and my father consulted the sages, and the sages consulted the physicians, who told them [what was wrong with the woman].'"  [translation by HWMNBN]
