פירוש מהרז"ו למדרש רבה, בראשית ו, ח (נמצא במדרש רבה, ניו יורק: ז. ברמן); ז"ל

ויתן אותם אל[ק]ים ר' יהודה בר אילעאי ורבנן.  דעת חז"ל בענינים אלו ידוע שהם סוברים שהארץ בכללה עם ים אוקינוס הוא שטחית.  וקצוותיו מגיעים עד הרקיע כמ"ש פר"א פרק ג'.  פסחים צ"ג והרקיע הוא כמו כיפה כדורית על הים.  והארץ וכל הישוב שאנו ראוים ויודעי' הוא מחצי העליונה של האהל.  והחצי התחתונה שקוע באוקינוס.  וזהו שאמרו מאחורי כיפה ולמעלה או למטה.  ודעת ר' יוחנן שמכריע ומחלק בין ימות החמה לימות הגשמים דברים אלו נשגבים מדעתינו וה' יאיר עינינו:  אם פורחים באויר.  בלא גלגל ואם שפין ברקיע כדלעיל בסימן ז' את סבור שהוא שף ברקיע ואם מהלכין כדרכן בגלגל.  אי אפשר לבריות לעמוד עליו בשכל אנושי.  ואין לנו אלא מה שקבלו החכמים מהנביאים:  עכ"ל

The view of Chazal in these matters is known – they believe that the earth in its entirety, including the ocean, is flat, and its extremities reach the sky [rakia], ... which is like a spherical cover over the ocean; the land and all settlement that we see and know is in the upper half of [the interior of this sphere], while the lower half is submerged in the ocean. ... ["Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai says, 'We do not know] whether they fly through the air,'" without [or independent of?] the earth, or whether they glide on the firmament....  It is not possible for [human] beings to resolve these matters with human intellect, and we know only the information that the sages received from the prophets.  [translation by HWMNBN]
