ר' משה קורדוואירו, פרדס רימונים, שער ו, פרק ג (ירושלים: יריד הספרים, תש"ס); ז"ל

ולפרש כי רז"ל חולקים עם חכמי התכונה וס"ל דחמה ולבנה ככבים ומזלות קבועים בגלגל אחד לבד א"א. וע"כ לא פליגי חכמי ישראל עם חכמי האומות אלא אם גלגל קבוע ומזל חוזר או מזל קבוע וגלגל חוזר אבל במנין הגלגלים לא פליגי. ועוד הרי חזרו והודו חכמי ישראל לחכמי אומות דמזל קבוע וגלגל חוזר אבל במנין הגלגלים לא פליגי. ואחר שמזל קבוע וגלגל חוזר יחויב רבוי הגלגלים לפי מנין המזלות שהם משונים בהתהלכותם, וזה מוכרח. עכ"ל

One cannot explain that Chazal disagree with the astronomers and believe that the sun, moon, stars and constellations are all fixed in only one sphere. The Jewish sages’ [Chazal’s] disagreement with the gentile sages extends only to whether the sphere is fixed and the constellations revolve, or the constellations are fixed and the sphere rotates; but they do not dispute the number of spheres. And furthermore, the Jewish sages recanted and conceded to the gentile sages that the constellations are fixed and the sphere rotates; and they [never even?] disputed the number of spheres. Since the constellation is fixed and the sphere rotates [as per the gentile sages], there must be as many spheres as there are stars that follow different paths – this is necessary.
